JESUS: IS HE GOD?

As we consider this very important question, “Jesus: Is He God?” we must have a source for the answer that is dependable and trustworthy, not merely an opinion. There is such a source, the Word of God, the Holy Scriptures. What man may say, think, believe or what a particular denomination may teach about the answer to this question is not nearly as important as what God Himself says in the Holy Scriptures. The Scriptures are inspired of God, completely true, inerrant and infallible. What the Scriptures teach is truth, and is true forever.

Please, honestly consider the following points and what God says in the Scriptures in coming to a Biblical conclusion to the question, “Jesus: Is He God?”

I. THERE IS ONLY ONE TRUE AND LIVING GOD. [Thus, Jesus can not be “a god”. Regarding Deity, either Jesus is THE GOD, or He is NO GOD at all.]

-“Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am He: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me” (Isaiah 43:10).

-“I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour” (Isaiah 43:11).

-“Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and His redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God” (Isaiah 44:6).

-“Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any” (Isaiah 44:8).

-“I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:” (Isaiah 45:5).

-“That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else” (Isaiah 45:6).

-“Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me” (Isaiah 45:21).

-“But the LORD is the true God, He is the living God, and an everlasting king: at His wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide His indignation” (Jeremiah 10:10).

-“Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?” (Malachi 2:10).

-“And the scribe said unto Him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but He:” (Mark 12:32).

-“Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith” (Romans 3:30).

-“One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Ephesians 4:6).

-“Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble” (James 2:19).

II. JESUS IS CALLED ‘GOD’ IN THE SCRIPTURES. [If Jesus is God, then He must be the ONE true and living God.]

-“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). [The verse contains a prophecy of Jesus’ birth in the flesh and His rule in His Kingdom when He comes to establish it on earth. Jesus is "The mighty God".]

-“Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). [The meaning of ‘Immanuel’ is given in Matthew 1:23.]

-“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us” (Matthew 1:23). [The child born of the virgin is “God with us”, Jesus.]

-“And Thomas answered and said unto Him, My Lord and my God” (John 20:28). [Thomas was speaking to Jesus after Jesus’ resurrection.]

-“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory” (I Timothy 3:16). [Jesus is God ‘manifest in the flesh’.]

-“And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep” (Acts 7:59, 60). [Jesus is ‘Lord’ and ‘God’.]

-“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which He hath purchased with His own blood” (Acts 20:28). [It was Jesus Christ that shed His blood on the cross of Calvary and purchased His church. This verse states that God purchased His church with His blood. Thus, Jesus is God.] [See also I John 3:16].

-“Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory” (I Corinthians 2:8). [Jesus is the One that was crucified on the cross, and He is called “the Lord of glory”.]

-“My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons” (James 2:1).

-“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:” (Philippians 2:5, 6).

-“But unto the Son He saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom” (Hebrews 1:8). [God the Father testifies that His Son, Jesus Christ, is God!]

-“And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know Him that is true, and we are in Him that is true, even in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life” (I John 5:20).

III. ONLY THE LORD, THE ONE TRUE LIVING GOD, IS TO BE WORSHIPPED. JESUS WAS WORSHIPPED.

A. GOD IS TO BE WORSHIPPED:

-“I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:2, 3).

-“For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:” (Exodus 34:14).

-“But the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched out arm, Him shall ye fear, and Him shall ye worship, and to Him shall ye do sacrifice” (II Kings 17:36).

-“Give unto the LORD the glory due unto His name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness” (Psalm 29:2).

-“So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for He is thy Lord; and worship thou Him” (Psalm 45:11).

-“Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve” (Matthew 4:10).

B. JESUS WAS WORSHIPPED: [Jesus accepted the worship knowing that only God and no other One was to be worshipped. Jesus is proclaiming by this that He is God.]

-“And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary His mother, and fell down, and worshipped Him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto Him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh” (Matthew 2:11).

-“While He spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped Him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live” (Matthew 9:18).

-“Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped Him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God” (Matthew 14:33).

-“And they worshipped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:” (Luke 24:52).

-“And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped Him” (John 9:38).

IV. GOD ONLY IS THE CREATOR. JESUS IS THE CREATOR. [Since only God is the Creator, and the Scriptures declare that Jesus is the Creator, then the logical conclusion must be that Jesus is God.]

A. GOD IS THE CREATOR:

-“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

-“And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good” (Genesis 1:21).

-“For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?” (Deuteronomy 4:32).

B. JESUS IS THE CREATOR:

-“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:1-3).

-“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). [This verse defines who the Word is, it is the One who was ‘made flesh’, and was glorious, this One is Jesus Christ.]

-“For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him: And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist” (Colossians 1:16, 17). [Jesus is the Creator of all things.]

V. GOD ONLY IS THE SAVIOUR. JESUS IS THE SAVIOUR. [If only God is the Saviour, and Jesus is the Saviour, then Jesus is God.]

A. GOD IS THE SAVIOUR:

-“For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee” (Isaiah 43:3).

-“Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour” (Isaiah 45:15).

-“Yet I am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me” (Hosea 13:4).

-“Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;” (I Timothy 1:1).

-“Not purloining, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things” (Titus 2:10).

-“But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,” (Titus 3:4).

-“To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen” (Jude 25).

B. JESUS IS THE SAVIOUR:

-“For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost” (Matthew 18:11).

-“Of this man's seed hath God according to His promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:” (Acts 13:23).

-“To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour” (Titus 1:4).

-“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;” (Titus 2:13). [The ‘great God’ is Jesus Christ. It is His glorious appearing we are looking for.]

-“Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:” (II Peter 1:1).

VI. JESUS IS JEHOVAH. [Note: The name “LORD” in all upper case letters is the English translation for “Jehovah”. Compare the following Scriptures groups describing Jehovah and those describing Jesus Christ.]

============

LORD (Jehovah): “In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and His train filled the temple. .. Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts” (Isaiah 6:1, 5).

Jesus: “These things said Esaias, when he saw His glory, and spake of Him” (John 12:41). [Isaiah 6 states that Isaiah saw the LORD (Jehovah), this verse tells us that the One he saw was Jesus. Jesus is Jehovah.]

============

LORD (Jehovah): “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God” (Isaiah 40:3).

Jesus: “For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make His paths straight” (Matthew 3:3). [John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus. Jesus is the LORD (Jehovah).]

============

LORD (Jehovah): “Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle” (Psalm 24:7, 8).

Jesus: “Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory” (I Corinthians 2:8). “My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons” (James 2:1).

============

LORD (Jehovah): “For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods” (Psalm 97:9).

Jesus: “He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: He that cometh from heaven is above all” (John 3:31).

============

LORD (Jehovah): “Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and His redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God” (Isaiah 44:6).

Jesus: “And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. And He laid His right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:” (Revelation 1:17). [Jesus spoke these words to the Apostle John.]

============

LORD (Jehovah): “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1).

Jesus: “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). [Jesus spoke these words.]

-“Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,” (Hebrews 13:20).

-“And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away” (I Peter 5:4). [Jesus is the ‘good shepherd’, the ‘great shepherd’, the ‘chief Shepherd’ and David’s shepherd. Jesus is definitely and clearly declared to be the LORD (Jehovah) in the Scriptures.]

============

LORD (Jehovah): “There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God” (I Samuel 2:2).

Jesus: “But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you;” (Acts 3:14). [Jesus is ‘the Holy One and the Just’ (cf. Acts 3:13-15).]

============

LORD (Jehovah): “Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee” (Nehemiah 9:6).

Jesus: “And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist” (Colossians 1:17).

-“Who being the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;” (Hebrews 1:3). (This verse is referring to the Son of God (vs. 2), the Lord Jesus Christ.)

============

VII. GOD ONLY IS FROM EVERLASTING; JESUS IS FROM EVERLASTING. JESUS IS GOD.

God:

-“And Abraham planted a grove in Beer-sheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God” (Genesis 21:33).

-“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God” (Psalm 90:2).

-“Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of His understanding” (Isaiah 40:28).

Jesus:

-“But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall He come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting” (Micah 5:2). [This is the prophecy concerning where the Messiah, Jesus Christ, would be born in the flesh. The Messiah is from everlasting. He is God.]

-“And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know Him that is true, and we are in Him that is true, even in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life” (I John 5:20).

VIII. JESUS HAS ALL THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD AS RECORDED IN THE SCRIPTURES. JESUS IS GOD.

-The Lord God is Omnipotent (Revelation 19:6). Jesus is Omnipotent (‘all-powerful’), (Matthew 28:18). Jesus has power over: Disease (Matthew 8:1-4); Demons (Matthew 8:16, 17); Nature (Matthew 8:26); Sin (Matthew 9:1-8); Traditions (Matthew 9:10-17); Death (Luke 7:14, 15).

-Jesus is Omniscient (‘all-knowing’): (Matthew 12:25; Luke 9:46, 47; John 1:48; John 2:24; John 4:29; John 6:64)

-Jesus is Omnipresent: Matthew 19:20; Matthew 28:20; John 3:13 (Jesus said this while He was on earth); John 14:20.

(Other References:)

-“For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent Him. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on Him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (John 5:22-24).

-“Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?” (John 14:9).

-“I and my Father are one” (John 10:30). [Jesus spoke these words.]

-“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one” (I John 5:7).

CONCLUSION:

Based upon what the Word of God clearly states we must conclude that Jesus is God. He is God the Son. Colossians 2:9 states concerning Christ, “For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” Thus, the truth is that Jesus is fully the one, true living God. To honor the Father, one must honor His Son, Jesus Christ. How great the glorious Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ truly is!
